"Mr Thomas Grant, 11 Mid Street, Mossend, West Calder, has been officially notified this week that his son Pte. Thomas Grant, of the Black Watch, was killed in action in France on 25th September. It appears that a notification of the death had been sent to Bonnington, Kirknewton, and had not been returned, and this had led in the delay in the information reaching Mr Grant at West Calder. Pte. Grant enlisted for nine years' service in the army, five of which he spent in India. At the close of seven years' service, in recognition of good behaviour he was transferred to the reserve. When the war broke out he was called to the colours, and played his part manfully. Deceased was 28 years of age."
